Komitas (Soghomon Gevorg Soghomonian, 1869–1935) occupies an exceptional place in the spiritual life of the Armenian people. A composer, musicologist, singer, conductor, and educator, he founded the National Composition School and is widely credited with discovering and preserving the ancient peasant folk music of Armenia — a tradition stretching back thousands of years.
